FACES-A RETREAT FOR EX-OFFENDER

In June of 2007, Matthew House hosted its very first Ex-Offender Retreat.  This retreat which took place at the Cabrini Retreat Center in Des Plaines catered to guest of Matthew House, who have been convicted of a felony offenses.  The eighteen men who attended were able to speak with motivational speaker, Dwight Battles, whose past experience as an ex-offender led him to share his story about how it changed his life.  Rodney Trussel, also a motivational speaker, not only uplifted the spirits of this unique group of men, but also offered valid and revealing information about the expungement and concealment of criminal backgrounds.

The overnight retreat gave the group an opportunity to enjoy another side of being an ex-offender. They talked among themselves sharing their stories, which allowed them to see there are other individuals who struggle with change like themselves.  They were able to sit pool side and enjoy the nice summer weather and enjoy the three full meals (2 breakfasts and dinner) supplied by the center. The men also received a small stipend for attending.

Overall, the retreat was well received by guests. The executive Director reports that subsequent to the retreat, several guests have made efforts to get their records concealed and/or expunged.  One client is now working and has his own apartment.
